Moving From Yell.com
Since we receive many enquiries from existing Yell.com Website owners, hoping to achieve more with their Websites for less money, we have put together a price comparison chart with our Web Builder Plus service and some additional information as to why we differ from the Yell.com approach to Website Design and Web Marketing.
All information on this page was correct at time of writing (February 2008) and prices are exclusive of VAT.
The Key Differences are:
- We do not tie clients to any form of annual contract. Clients can cancel at any time with no cancellation penalties.
- We do not create different Payment Classifications (and, therefore, costs) dependant on industry type. Yell.com, effectively, have three price bands.
- We are 74% cheaper in year one for Band 1, 2 and 3 industry types. To bring Websites up to our preferred, minimum 8 pages, we are 79% cheaper than Bands 1, 2 and 3.
- If you want to trial Yell's Priority Advert with Web Link for the first year, then it is cheaper to build your Website using Web Builder Plus and subscribing to their Advertisement service, separately.
- Yell.com's Website payment structure is tied into their Priority Advert with Web Link service. If the Priority Advert proves a poor investment, then, ultimately, you could end up paying too much money for what is, arguably, a very simple looking Website.
- In which case, over the average lifetime (5 years) for an eight page Website, you would be paying over £3,000 (Bands 1,2 3) compared to £644 using Web Builder Plus.
- We do not agree with, proactively, promoting three page Websites (to all intents and purposes, Yell.com Websites are two pages). We believe these types of Websites have limited chance of success. - Clients can add an unlimited amount of Web Pages using Web Builder Plus at no extra cost. Additional pages in Yell.com are £100 each with a maximum of 10 additional pages.
- .Co.uk Domain Names can be purchased for as little as £8.50. Yell.com charge £45!
- We are able to give impartial advice on how best to market your Website. Remember, over 70% of all UK searches are made via Google. Will Google AdWords give you a better return on investment for your Marketing budget? For example, in Google, you can create an unlimited amount of adverts at no extra cost. Yell.com charge £65 for each additional advert (for first ten).
- Our designs (over 450) are, arguably, of superior quality and offer much more functionality. Includes, amongst other things, On-line Shopping Cart, Online Photo Gallery, Online Polling system and Online Forum, all at no extra charge.
- We offer a migration path to other of our Premium Web Design services giving you unlimited scope to expand your Website.
- All our Websites have their own comprehensive Website Statistics, allowing you, amongst other things, to confirm where referrals are coming from and, therefore, where best to spend your Marketing budget.

The following charts, as above, also includes the cost for a .co.uk Domain Name and prices are rounded to the nearest pound, Sterling. .Co.uk Domain Names are renewed every two years. Amounts in the Web Builder column includes the price for Web Builder Plus (as the above chart) and the cost for subscribing to Yell's Priority Advert with Web Link service. The purpose of this chart is to demonstrate, if you want to trial Yell's Priority Advert service, then you can do so, separately, and it would still work out cheaper by using Web Builder Plus, in tandem. Changing Over To Web Builder Plus
Changing your Website from Yell.com over to Web Builder Plus could not be easier or less time consuming.
To simplify the move from Yell.com over to Web Builder Plus, we will manage the transfer process on your behalf at no extra cost. This also includes, transferring all written content and pictures over to Web Builder Plus and creating corresponding pages. Your own involvement during the transfer is minimal and only includes completing two simple forms. The process is as follows;
- Although we have tried to include as much information as possible regarding our Web Builder Plus service and moving from Yell.com, we are sure you will still have some questions that need to be answered. In which case, why not Contact Us today and speak with one of our professionals who will be able to answer all your immediate questions.
- Once you are satisfied, simply Email us confirmation of your wish to move ahead with the project. We will then send a reply, confirming the costs for the service.
- Your request will be passed to your own dedicated Account Manager who will be responsible for the transfer and your on-going requirements. At this stage, a simple form will be Emailed to you, requesting payment details.
- Once the form has been returned, we will then create a Web Builder Plus account for you to use and at the same time, transfer all your existing written content and pictures over to the new Website. At this stage, we will also set up your Email requirements.

Advertising or Marketing your Website
The majority of Yell.com Website Owners we speak with are disappointed at the return their Website is giving them. In fact, many are so disillusioned, they are wondering if a Website is really for them at all.
To us and many within the industry, this comes as no surprise. Most Yell.com Websites we come across and are asked to look at, include no more than two or three pages. Many people believe, these types of Websites are no more than glorified advertisements, that are hard pushed to gain the benefits, enjoyed by well thought out and more comprehensively designed Websites. This could be true of all such Websites and not just those designed by Yell.com. However, most of these other types of poorly designed Websites have been purchased with a one-off payment and a low annual Hosting Plan. However, with Yell.com Websites, businesses could end up paying in excess of £2,500 (over 5 years) for the privilege of owning a Website that fails to live up to expectations.
Why These Types Of Websites Give Poor Returns
Most businesses with Yell.com Websites, believe a Website's primary function is to offer another form of Advertising. It is why many are no more than two or three pages. Many of these Websites, we feel, were purchased because the business, initially, wanted a Priority Advert within Yell, and since Yell.com Websites already include this type of Advert, it seemed better value to pay a little more and have a Website at the same time, similar to the phrase, "killing two birds with the one stone" approach.
The biggest problem with a Website that is, basically, an advertisement and not much use as anything else, comes when;
- The anticipated influx of sales leads you hoped or were led to believe would arrive via your new Website, failed to materialise. Further more, the reality suddenly dawns on you, by committing to an integrated Website and Yell advertising service, if the advertising side fails, then you are, effectively, left paying way-over-the-odds for a very simple Website. In fact, for Bands 1, 2 and 3, you could be paying almost £2,500 over five years for the privilege (even worse if you have already purchased additional pages at £100 per page)! Imagine what type of Websites are available for that amount of investment? Our Premium Web Design service is a good example.
Give Yourself More Options By keeping Your Website Costs Separate
By now, you are, probably, begining to to understand the possible financial risk, businesses could face when subscribing to Yell's integrated Website and Priority Advert services.
Even if your Priority Adverts are giving a good return, as we have detailed already in this section, it could still have been more cost effective to purchase Web Builder Plus and pay for the Priority Advert, separately. At least with this approach, if the advertisement proves a poor investment, then you can simply cancel your subscription without it affecting your Website. In this scenario, you could have saved a whopping £2,000 by using Web Builder Plus and even more, if you have already purchased additional pages.
A Better and Safer Approach To Advertising Or Marketing Your Website
There are a whole host of approaches, businesses can use to advertise their products and services and a well designed Website should play at least some part in all of them. These should include both Internet based and more traditional approaches. Without going into too much detail at this stage, the following gives a summary of how your Website could be used. - Subscribe your Website to free, national Web Directories and Search Engines. There are over fifty in the UK and all our clients receive a list of these. Even if they do not generate many sales leads, your entries are likely to be picked up by Search Engines, giving you wider exposure.
- Check out Industry specific Directories and confirm if they offer priority advertising. If any of these Directories appear on the first page of Search Engines for your key search phrases, then they may prove a good investment.
- Create reciprocal links with other related Websites. Not only is this free to do so and may be a good source of referrals, it is also an important Search Engine Optimisation technique and may result in your Website receiving higher rankings in Search Engines.
- By participating in industry specific Web Forums (typically, indexed by Search Engines) and offering advice to those requiring it (potential clients), there is every possibility your help may turn into an eventual sales lead.
- In certain circumstances, many people still use Yellow Pages to find local businesses. Some even use Yell.com. If you already receive a good number of sales leads via a Priority Advert (Yell.com) or advertisement in Yellow Pages, then we would recommend continue doing so. If you have no listing in either of these services, then you should contact them to receive your free listing. If you want to trial their Priority Advert and pay, in our opinion, their comparatively high fees, then you can do so for one year, safe in the knowledge, you can easily cancel at the end of the term.
- Consider creating a Google Adwords campaign. Since Google accounts for more than 70% of all UK searches, arguably, they offer, by far, the biggest exposure to people looking for your services. The service only requires £5 to set it up and this amount is offset against your click through's. You are able to create an unlimited amount of adverts at no extra cost and clicks can cost as little as 4p a click. With a little bit of advice, there is no reason why you cannot gain a top five ranking in Google for your preferred search phrases within hours of setting it up.
- Inform all your customers of your Website address and encourage them to use it for updates on your business and its products and services. The more they use it, the more they are likely to remember it and recommend it when making referrals.
- Upload a copy of your Company Brochure to your Website and encourage existing and potential clients to download copies from your Website. Apart from being able to update the document to the latest version, a significant amount of money can be saved on outdated, hard copy versions. If you have been put off the idea of a Company Brochure because of cost, now is your opportunity to have one.
- Send Email Newsletters to those requesting to be kept up-to-date on new developments and refer them to your Website for further information.
- Use your Website to speed up sales negotiations by referring potential clients to your Website for more comprehensive information. Not only does your Website give the opportunity to, succinctly, deliver your key sales messages, it can do so 24/7. The page you are reading is a good example.
- And the list goes on.
Try Not To Put All Your Eggs In One Basket
In summary, when attempting to use your Website to generate additional revenue, try and expose your Website to as many marketing initiatives you can think of. Our Why Have A Website article is a good source of ideas.
In fact, try and think of your Website as more than just another form of advertising. By doing so, you will begin to realise the real benefits of owning a Website. Afterall, there is no better advertisement for your business than a well thought out and informative Website, delivering what potential clients need to know, to arrive at a decision.
Whatever you do and we hope you have realised by now, try not to put all your "eggs in the one basket", as Yell's integrated Website and Advertising model lends itself too. Not only does it, possibly, not offer the best return on your investment, it could, ultimately, end up costing you many thousands of pounds more than was needed.
And finally, always evaluate each of your Marketing/Advertising initiatives on an annual basis and react accordingly. Pay attention to the facts and try not to be persuaded by individuals with vested interests in their own services, that is, unless they can come up with their own hard facts that you are benefiting, personally.
