How To Design A Web Site - High Level Sales Messages
When we are asked by clients how to design a Web Site, we tell them, no matter how small or large your Web site is going to be, consistency is required on how you portray your business.
To achieve this, we recommend agreeing at least five key selling factors about your business and attempt to include as many of these in each Web page. These high level messages could relate to;
- The quality of service.
- Friendliness of your staff.
- Flexible approach you take to business.
- Competitive fees/prices.
- Having an eye for detail that makes the difference between an average service and a very good one.
- Leading edge products/solutions or the uniqueness of your business.
Web Page Design Tips - Soft Selling Techniques
Incorporating as many examples of the above messages into your Web page, helps re emphasise the key selling points of your business without making it too obvious to the visitor. The soft sell approach, is one of the best design tips and, usually, creates more empathy with visitors and gives them a feel for who you are and not just what you are.
Hooking Website Visitors Quickly
For the majority of Websites under thirty pages, the Homepage is one of the most important pages in the whole site. It could be your only opportunity to sell your business to the visitor, so, it has to be good. Because a visitor has visited your Website, it does not mean they will read every page. Most Web site visitors only look at three or four pages.
Objective Of The Homepage
The Homepage, in our opinion, should be much like a well written Management Summary in a report. It should highlight the key factors of the report in a concise and compelling format and offer links to other areas of the document where more information can be obtained.
Common Mistake
Most Websites make the mistake of making the Homepage their About Us page. When a visitor lands on a Homepage, it is unlikely they will want to know about the history of the business. Instead, they may have more compelling questions, such as, can you help them, why should they use your services and are you different from other Websites they have visited. If the correct "vibes" have been created in the Homepage, they may want to learn more by visiting the About Us page, for example. A well written Homepage should offer compelling reasons why the visitor should use you.
Standard pages
For the majority of small websites, the following pages are often included as a minimum.
About us page
Should be at least one page. One page could be dedicated to the history of the business, however, instead of giving the page an academic feel, tell the visitor why the business was formed. This creates empathy and gives you the opportunity to include many of the high level sales messages. Other pages could be included, introducing visitors to key staff members.
Contact page
Should give the visitor address and telephone details. Consider including Email hyperlinks for various parts of the business. For example, info@yourcompany.co.uk, admin@yourcompany.co.uk, servicetype@yourcompany.co.uk. Knowing that their enquiry has gone to the correct department, is reassuring for the visitor.
Consider including an on-line form, making it much simpler for visitors to write to you. This is much simpler than using the visitors Email client. Keep the form short. the longer it is, the less likely visitors will use it. Name, Company name, telephone number, Email address and a description box for typing the message, should suffice.
