Help Increase My Internet Sale!
If you have registered a new Website and are looking to use it, as a vehicle for generating new business leads, then Cost or Pay Per Click (CPC or PPC) advertising, such as, Google's AdWords, may be the only way for getting your new site noticed by Web Surfers in the short to medium term.
This is due to, most Search Engines putting new sites into, what is commonly known as, a "sandbox", in their war against "Spammers". "Help increase my Internet sale" is a common request from clients, a request that, in the short term, at least, can be resolved with a PPC campaign.
However, once your Website starts receiving good placements for specific search phrases by using good Search Engine optimization techniques, CPC campaigns can still represent a good return on investment.
Google AdWords
One of the most popular CPC or PPC services, is Google's Adword Service. Full details of this service can be found on Google's Website at www.google.co.uk/ads. Registering and setting up advertisements in AdWords, is quick and simple, even for the complete novice. The simplicity and the speed your adverts appear on-line, are the key reasons we use AdWords ourselves and why we recommend it to our clients. Other systems, such as Yahoo's Overture PPC service, is a little more involved and takes longer for your advertisements to be approved. Google is also cheaper.

How Does Google AdWords Work
Registering an account takes a matter of minutes and the process, also includes, setting up your first campaign or CPC advertisement. No payment is required at this stage. On receipt of an Email from Google, new users can log into to their account and activate their advertisements, by registering their payment details. A £5 deposit is required, compared to £60 charged by Overture (at time of writing). Once activated, your advertisements can appear on the Internet within a matter of minutes, compared to days in the Overture system.
Google AdWord Tips
Google allows users, to create multiple campaigns, especially useful, for larger businesses. However, if you are a small to medium sized business, creating a single campaign is, usually, sufficient. Instances when you may wish to create additional campaigns could be when:
- All your daily budget is being used by one, particular, advert and is suspending your other adverts for the remainder of the day. Unlike Overture, Google allows you to set a daily budget, not to be exceeded. When this feature is activated, Google suspends your advertising for the remainder of the day
- Or you want to track the launch of a new service or product and need to analyse your CPC separately (this can be achieved with a single campaign but is much cleaner if separated).
Creating A Google Advertisement
If you want greater control over which adverts are to be shown for specific search phrases, you may prefer to create a separate Ad Group for each advertisement. Although, multiple advertisements can be created for each Ad Group, Google uses it's own initiative for displaying advertisements, which may not be the best ones to show.
This is caused, by advertisements sharing the same keyword list. A reporting level is also lost by sharing keywords, since, Ad Group analysis, is for all advertisements within the group.
When creating an advertisement, it helps when most of the keywords are included in the actual advertisement. Although, adverts may be shown in the results without any of your keywords (when the system uses the keyword section to return results), Web Surfers may be less inclined to click your advertisement, if none of their keywords appear in the advertisement. Having keywords in the advert, may also help improve your results.
Keyword Phrases In Your Advertisement
Once the advert has been created, do not forget to include keyword phrases. Try and create as many keyword phrases as you can, by using the keywords within the, actual, advert. This ties the two together. For example, if your advert included " Accountant Birmingham" in it's title, you may wish to create "accountant birmingham", "accountants in birmingham", "birmingham accountants", "accountants birmingham etc. in the keyword section.
Determining Cost Per Click Rates And Daily Budget
In common with most other Cost per Click or Pay Per Click on-line advertising services, such as, Overture's service, the cost you pay for a click is, automatically, calculated by Google.
For example, if your maximum bid on a, particular, search phrase or advertisement is 50p, and your nearest competitor is only bidding a maximum of 35p, then the system will only charge you 36p, depending if, this feature is activated in the user preferences. Google, also allows, a daily budget to be set, that, once exceeded, automatically suspends your account until the next day. This gives tight control over how much you want to spend, a feature that does not appear to be included in Overture.
Minimum Payment Requirements
It is also important to note, that, Google does not include any minimum payment requirements i.e. if your monthly bill is no more than £1, £1 is the amount, taken against your Credit Card. This compares favourably to Overture, who have a minimum monthly budget of £20 (at time of writing). Therefore, if your clicks add up to only £1 for any calendar month, you will still be billed the difference. Whereas, Google is a pay-as-you-go, Overture requires your account to be topped up with sufficient credit.
Monitoring Your CPC Campaign
Both, Google and Overture, have strong administration Panels, which, amongst other things, gives detailed analysis of your campaigns.
Try and create as many advertisements as you can think of. The more, the greater chance of being found. If your campaign is showing poor results, it could, quite possibly be, because your search phrases are as not as popular as you first thought. In which case, it is important to carry our some investigation and using a product, such as, Wordtracker, may save you many hours trying to second guess what potential customers are, actually, entering into Search engines.
