Most of these links are from unrelated Websites, which, Search Engines, conclude, can impede the quality of their results.
They are now looking at this more closely and greater emphasis, is now being put on related Websites. Websites, with hundreds of unrelated links, with the purpose of trying to influence Search results, may now be penalised by adopting this approach.
This type of abuse has, unfortunately, spawned, what are called in the Web Design industry as, Link Farms. Websites that promote Link farms should be avoided at all costs and may end up getting your Website banned from the major Search Engines.

All visitors to your Website, should be treated with respect. After all, they have taken the trouble to visit your Website and will, most likely, visit again and possibly recommend your Website to other people. With this in mind, in the promotion of any Webpage within your site, it is in your own interest, when inviting other Websites to link to you, to ensure they offer related or complimentary content, your visitors may find of interest. Depending on the size of your business or business type, the Directory structure, may not be relevant to your own requirements. In which case, a single page, that includes instructions for creating reciprocal links and listing Websites that link back, should serve the same purpose.
When creating reciprocal links, it is important, to instruct any reciprocal link partners to use the link text and description defined by you. Ideally, link text should incorporate your keywords or phrase. The description, should also include keywords and phrases, since, this may be indexed by Search Engines on partner sites.
When creating reciprocal links with other Websites, it is common courtesy, to include their link on your Website before contact is made. Other website owners will appreciate the effort already made and will be more inclined to include your link. By including room for a potential partner to include the URL on their Website to your Website, gives you the opportunity to check it's suitability before accepting and including it on your own site.
